Welcome to the week 3 Nonprofit Question and Answer session.

According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), there are more than 1.5 million nonprofits in the U.S. The NCCS also estimates that nonprofits represent 9.2% of annual American wages and salaries. Nonprofits are serious business, which is why I have partnered with NetworkPeninsula to offer business training sessions to nonprofit leaders and staff. I am also answering questions about nonprofit operations over the next several weeks on the blog.

Business.

Q: What should businesses look for in a nonprofit they support?

A: When choosing a nonprofit to support, take a look at prospective organizations’ mission statements and find one that matches with what your company believes and how you do business.

Make sure the nonprofit’s public reputation is solid and positive. The partnership forged between your business and the nonprofit you support will reflect on both entities’ reputations, so you want to make sure you are paired with someone you are proud to have your name associated with.

When possible, the customers that support or benefit from the nonprofit can be the same customers or clients who purchase the products and services from your business. This is a win for the community as a whole, as well as the profit and nonprofit organization, because it promotes cooperation and collaboration.
